Surviving the Dissertation: Tips

September19

The final tip is, “You can do this,” a hopeful message to not give up. I am proud to say, at this point, that I have, indeed, mostly done this. There’s still a long way to go between here and the final submission. But I have an actual draft! Whole and complete. Sitting right there on my hard drive (and in dropbox, and on a USB drive, and my backup hard drive, and on my friend’s computer…).

This post isn’t just to brag about my accomplishments, but to offer tips for getting through the dissertation process from someone who mostly has and is now looking back on the places where I struggled the most. The (occasionally contradictory) tips below represent the things I would have done differently, if I could have.

Set deadlines early on in the process. Having a goal to work towards is incredibly important for sustaining motivation over a long period of time. As someone who needs the pressure of a deadline to get anything done, I found that a list of due dates was essential for keeping me on track.

But make sure those goals are flexible. That said, I pretty much immediately blew past my deadlines and had to keep adjusting them back. Life unexpectedly happens often over a year-long period (or more!), and knowing that your deadlines will likely change will help to prevent you feeling guilty about that. If you’ve set early deadlines, you should be able to move things around without throwing off your schedule.

Ask for feedback early, and often. The sooner you can be communicating with your committee about your writing, the smoother your editing stages will go. Sit with your advisor with just a rough outline of the chapter and find out if it works. Send partial drafts to anyone willing to read them. This will not only prevent feelings of isolation as you write, as it will keep you connected to your committee and other writers, but it will also help prevent situations where you have to rewrite entire chapters.

As long as you can handle feedback, anyway. There may be times when you don’t need actual criticism, and instead just need to write, or to have someone say something encouraging. One of my biggest stumbling blocks while drafting came from receiving negative feedback on a chapter. My fragile ego interpreted the critique as a condemnation of my viability as a scholar, and I moped around for several weeks, wasting time assuming I was worthless. At a time when I needed encouragement, hearing any criticism, no matter how constructive, hurt my productivity. Knowing yourself and the kinds of feedback you need as you write is important on a project like this. If you need someone to say “yay, good job!” find someone to say that to you.

Find out what your committee wants and expects from your work. Following the advice about feedback above, find out what kind of writing your committee expects. Read dissertations completed by students they have worked with before. Ask them often what kinds of expectations they have for your chapters, and your project: what kinds of sources, how footnotes get used, the structure of chapters, how they feel about headings, and more. Knowing expectations will help you write effectively to your audience, and communication is key to avoiding potential pitfalls.

But remember that this is your dissertation. At the end of the day, this is your work. It represents who you are as a scholar (for now, anyway). Stand up for what you think is important, and for what you want to say. Trying to please the entirety of your committee may be impossible, and at the end of the day it is up to you to know what you need to write.

Take time off when you need it. As Katy Meyers mentioned in her post last week, taking time off is important to personal happiness, and you should do so as guilt free as possible. Dissertations take time, and you will need to take breaks and recharge at some point. There will be times where you have to focus your energies elsewhere: teaching, the job market, writing publishable articles, sitting on committees, taking care of your family, watching cartoons. It is important to understand that short breaks in writing will happen, and you can take those breaks without feeling guilty.

But remember to start writing again. Short breaks are awesome! Take a week off to focus on grading 150 papers. Take off two weeks to prepare for job interviews. But then start writing again. Academic work is always a balancing act between various pressures, and you have to get used to carving out time for writing next to all of your responsibilities. We likely all know that guy who is on his 7th year of writing because he “can’t find the time” to write. Don’t be that guy. To that end…

Claim writing time by learning to say no. One of the challenges of writing a dissertation is being surrounded by people who don’t understand; some of your colleagues, friends, and family likely have no idea what writing a long form project like a dissertation is like. It is hugely overwhelming and distracting, and you need to be able to say “Go away, I’m writing.” Sometimes this means turning down a seat on that committee, choosing not to go to that concert, or kicking your friends out of your office. My friends often struggle with the fact that I don’t have the free time to spend with them that I used to, but it is important to my sanity to say “no” every now and then, as much as I hate it.

But say yes sometimes too. As I said above, taking breaks is essential. Next time someone asks you to go for a beer, close your computer and say yes.

Carve out little bits of writing time. As I mentioned in my previous post, dissertation writing is a marathon, not a sprint. Writing often happens in little bits spread out over time. No matter how busy you are, take the time to write for half an hour a day. You can find half an hour somewhere. Get up early if you have to. If you write about a page a day, you can finish a chapter in a month.

Stop making excuses. There will always be a million reasons to use dissertation writing services uk. You have other work to do, you have papers to grade, you have jobs to apply for, you have meetings to go to, your back hurts, your computer is acting funny, the stars aren’t in the right position. There will always be reasons not to write. And it’s hard, but sometimes you pretty much just have to tell these reasons to shut up. Sitting down to write, even when it seems like you can’t, is the only way to get anything written.

How Is Dissertation Evaluated – According to Best Dissertation Help

May17

A dissertation determines your overall grade and can either help your academic career or break it. It requires investing time, energy, motivation and skills such as research skills in order to do a great job. However, to ensure that your dissertation is not only accepted but also wins you a great grade and high regard, you must present an original dissertation that fulfills the objectives it has indicated. It should be well-researched, coherent and a demonstration of knowledge applied in solving a real life situation effectively. To produce such a dissertation and get high marks for it, you need to know how a dissertation is evaluated so that you can tailor it for a great evaluation. While these evaluations differ among different departments or universities the criteria is pretty much the same and may include the following:

  • Emphasis is mainly placed the skill with which you have used the research methods to obtain scientifically presented findings as well as masterfully draw conclusions from these results.
  • The dissertation should be original and relevant as well as demonstrate your ability to thoroughly conduct a research study.
  • It should fulfill the requirements of your discipline/ department.
  • The study should be well-designed and well-presented without any, or with minimal, grammatical or style errors.
  • Your literature review should be relevant and very specific to your topic instead of an account of general information related to your field of study. The review should be both descriptive and critically analyze previous works while explicitly showing how his methodology and the review are linked.
  • The dissertation you present should have the research methodology appropriate and justified. You should minimize the likelihood of bias and limitations.
  • The findings from your research should answer your research questions as well as meet your objectives. There should be no doubt as to the testing of your hypotheses.
  • Your results should be well presented such that the patterns can be clearly identified and have been summarized.
  • In your discussion make a point of analyzing the main points first and speculations or reconceptualization should be well founded in the results presented as well as linked to literature. Results should be interpreted exhaustively and innovatively related to the research hypothesis.
  • The reference list should give a complete and accurate account of sources used in the dissertation.
  • Finally, there should be some recommendations for future studies.
  • Once the evaluation is done by supervisors and advisors who propose a grade that is either confirmed or rejected by a board of examiners, the final grade is given.

How to write your dissertation

January27

The dissertation should be your own work and not simply a collection of parts of papers from the literature. Plagiarism, whether from journals, books or internet sources, will be severely punished and will result in an automatic failure (see section on plagarism)

You should read as many primary references (i.e. original papers as opposed to reviews and books) as possible and base your dissertation on these sources. When you have assembled the information for your dissertation you should plan its presentation: this is most easily accomplished by dividing your dissertation into sections, each with its own heading. Where appropriate each section is further divided into sub–sections each with its sub–heading.

Always remember that your dissertation has to be read and understood by other people and that this process is easier the greater the structure given to the dissertation. You should write in good grammatical English using paragraphs, as appropriate. The dissertation should be divided into sections. All dissertations must have

(i)                A Title Page giving the title of the project, your name, department; the date; type of project.

(ii)              This should be followed by a Contents Page listing the headings (and sub-headings) of the sections of the project dissertation and the appropriate page numbers. The dissertation should be paginated in a single sequence from start to finish numbering each page.

(iii)             Although usually the last part to be drafted, an Abstract (one page maximum) should be included before the main text. The abstract is designed to summarise the work that follows. It should briefly underline the importance of the work and the aims of the project, summarise succinctly but accurately what is contained in the dissertation and dissertation the principal conclusions. It must be self-contained and you should not cross-reference to the main text or to the references. Abbreviations should not be used in the abstract.

(iv)            It is often convenient to have a Glossary or Abbreviation Section on conventions used such as abbreviations, nomenclature — especially the numbering system used — and any other items which are used repeatedly in the dissertation but which a non-expert reader (e.g. another third year student) would not be familiar with.

(v)              The Introduction should cover the general background to the area of work which is covered by the project. This section may only need references to appropriate reviews and/or books.

(vi)            In the Main Review the references should be mainly to the original literature. It is usually best to subdivide the review into separate sections each with its own heading. This helps the reader identify the content matter and from the contents page the logic of the dissertation is apparent. If you use scanned material of, for example, structures, graphs or diagrams the origin of the material should be indicated with a reference number, usually in the legend. Chemical formulae should be numbered with Arabic numbers (not Roman). As they are time consuming to draw it is best not to repeat more formulae than necessary and just use the appropriate formula numbers. All chemical structures should be drawn using ChemDraw or other appropriate chemical drawing package. In the text, the reference is indicated by a superscript number which corresponds to the numbered list of references given at the end of the dissertation. References must be presented sequentially through the dissertation, starting with reference 1. If it is necessary to quote a reference more than once the number assigned to it the first time is re-used, ie. the list of references should not contain duplicates. The reference number should be placed after the statement or sentence to which it applies.

(vii)           The Conclusions section is not a summary of the work (this is the role of the Abstract). It should contain the key pieces of knowledge that you are trying to impart and an overall conclusions. It may also contain an indication of future work.

(viii)         The last section of the project dissertation should be the References numbered in order. This must follow the Royal Society of Chemistry style. Note that the references will be those used in all previous sections — introduction and review. The sources of all information used should be indicated by means of references. Where only a secondary source has been consulted this should be quoted in the reference list together with the appropriate primary source. It is assumed that unless otherwise stated a reference covers all of the material presented until a new reference is cited.  A leaflet on citing references in Chemistry is available below; use it!

Format & Typing

It is important that your dissertation is easy to read. It should be word-processed with one-and-a-half-spaced typescript, and printed (single-sided) with adequate margins (2.50 cm) to permit binding. The recommended font is Times New Roman Size 12 and the pages must be numbered. It is best not to repeat more structures than necessary and instead to subsequently refer to the appropriate identifying numbers.

Proof-Reading

Dissertations are expected to be virtually error-free; a dissertation containing several errors per page is completely unacceptable. You should certainly use the spell-checker built into the word-processing package to catch simple typographical errors, but you also need to carefully read through the report to catch other types of error. You will almost certainly need to carry out this proof-reading several times. You are strongly recommended to print out the final draft of the dissertation as it much easier to spot errors when reading a paper copy than on screen.

Typical Dissertation Structure

Abstract

This is an overview of the dissertation and is meant to give the reader a general idea of both your objective and results. You should keep it brief between 75 and 125 words.

Table of Contents Page

This displays the arrangement of the main sections and often subsections with respective page numbers. One page where possible is an appropriate length.

Chapter 1: Introduction

A detailed account of your research question and why it is worth examining. State your hypothesis here and give a summary of your conclusion. Keep it simple, clear and to the point not forgetting that the introduction should be about 10% of the entire project.

Chapter 2: Literature Review

In this chapter, you consider other people’s ideas and theories in relation to your research. You should compare and contrast at least 10 other sources and a couple of theories/models. This chapter consists of about 20% of the dissertation.

Chapter 3: Methodology

Here you outline and defend your research design. You also explain how you collected empirical data. Did you use interviews, questionnaires etc? What were the main challenges?

Chapter 4: Findings

This is an important chapter in your dissertation and also the largest. It forms about 30% of the project. This is where you bring out the findings deriving from an in-depth analysis of your empirical data. Be careful not to give your interpretation or draw conclusions here.

Chapter 5: Discussion

You are now ready to connect the evidence from your own research with aspects of your literature review as well as discuss your main finding.

Chapter 6: Conclusion

State the conclusion(s) you draw from your work clearly. What is your take on the effectiveness of your research design? Ensure that all the questions raised in earlier chapters have been addressed adequately. Indicate what further research can be done to strengthen your conclusion and give a recommendation if any is required.

Bibliography

On a separate page, list all the references such as books, articles, and websites as well as all the sources of empirical data. Entries are made in alphabetical order according to the required writing style.

How to choose the right dissertation topic

July3

Choose the Right Dissertation Topic

The dissertation is a crucial element in any degree program. It is a vital component in an academic’s pursuit of a higher degree, requiring the student’s competence and understanding of the field he has chosen to specialize in. Completing a dissertation provides students the unique opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge he has cultivated through years of study.

A critical component in the completion of a dissertation project is choosing the right dissertation topic. Many students find themselves stuck and unable to come up with an appropriate topic for study. The dissertation topic sets the tone for the entire study, so choosing the right topic is important.

There are several factors that need to be considered when choosing a dissertation topic. These factors include the presence of existing literature on the topic, the relevance of the topic to the student’s chosen career path, the availability of any past studies related to the topic, the practicability of the methodology, the access to and relative ease of gathering the required data.

All these factors shape the four main items that need to be addressed when coming up with a dissertation topic:

  • Area of study: choose the right dissertation topic

Some factors affecting the area of study are the student’s chosen career path and the relevance of the study to said career. A student should choose a topic wherein he may apply all the knowledge he has gained in years of study.

If a student chooses a topic within his field of study, it is very likely that the student will not lose interest in the study. Completing a dissertation will take from 6 months to more than a year, so the topic should be able to keep the student’s attention.

  • Issues: choose the right dissertation topic

An issue pertaining to the chosen area for the dissertation project should then be determined. A student can start looking for issues or arguments relating to the subject amongst the people who work within that field. These issues will help shape the dissertation’s main problems and objectives.

  • The Methodology: choose the right dissertation topic

The practicability of the methodology is a major consideration in determining the method of research. The student needs to figure out how he intends to proceed with the study and collect the required data.

There are several types of strategies in conducting a dissertation project, to determine the appropriate strategy; a student must refer to the established objectives of the study. In choosing a methodology, one should make sure that the process of collecting data is feasible and that the data derived using such methods are viable and applicable to the study being conducted.

  • Literature: choose the right dissertation topic

Related literature to support the thesis presented in the study is an important part of the dissertation. It is advised to study areas with readily available sources of information – be it publications, academic journals or other dissertations on the same area of study.

One important thing to note is that when you are coming up with your dissertation topic, you must make sure that you have all materials that’ll enable you successfully complete your dissertation without a problem. Your topic serves as the foundation on which you’ll build every content of your dissertation.

If you are finding it difficult to choose one, or you feel you can’t afford having your dissertation progress hitting a roadblock because of your inability to get enough materials, consider using a dissertation writing services. They have think-tank, they do research to find recent topics with enough research scope so writing dissertation becomes easier and interesting.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THESIS AND DISSERTATION

June12

Individuals who constantly find this piece of information tangible are undergraduate and those that choose to add more value to their first degree. In order to have a good grade, writing good thesis or dissertation is a prerequisite. Although, most institutions now offers coursework detailing the difference between thesis or dissertation to enhance their students’ performance in preparatory for project write up in their final year, yet understanding the difference appears to be more difficult; probably because of the significant similarities between the two great work or base on the fact that they are mostly used interchangeably. Both thesis and dissertation are heavier and heavier labor intensive and must be treated seriously.

Both documents are similar in structure as they contain an introduction, an overview of literature, body, conclusion, bibliography and appendix.

Basic Differences

  1. Thesis is usually required for a master’s degree while dissertations are usually required for doctorate degrees. However, the ring of confusion with this difference is that some master’s degree do not require thesis but students furthering on a doctorate will be advice to take a master degree that requires knowledge of thesis.
  2. A prove of knowledge acquired throughout your graduate program is established in thesis while dissertation is an opportunity during a doctorate program to showcase an innovative ideas, theories or practices to your field. The point is to achieve a completely new concept, to develop and defend its values.
  3. Thesis laid emphasis on your ability to think critically about a particular subject and discuss the knowledge with in-depth analysis for clear understanding while dissertation, uses research to simply come up with new ideas entirely and test your hypothesis, theory or concept. Most of the information in the dissertation is credible.
  4. In a master’s project the student’s ideas are welcomed and expected but the focus is on obtaining technical expertise, not doing original research while a doctorate degree which makes use of dissertation strongly depend on doing original research. While a thesis should always be composed on an original subject and include your hypothesis, while working alongside an advisor. Dissertations are made up of original insights and collected knowledge that you have accumulated throughout your studies.
  5. Dissertations are usually written separate from your studies and are only reviewed when you submit a draft to one of your peers. Although both require supporting evidence the dissertation is based more on opinion than subject research, while a thesis puts conclusive research ahead of author opinion.
  6. Lastly, there is an obvious difference between the length of thesis and dissertation. Master’s thesis must be at least 100 pages in length, probably a little more than that. However, the doctoral dissertation must be much more, because they include a lot of background research and information with every detail of their proposal and how it got the information. A dissertation is an extremely complex task. You can as well receive guidance from a faculty member who will serve as your dissertation advisor. This advisory will be there to point you in the right direction, if caught, can help locate resources and ensure that your proposal is on the right track.
