Every argument has a conclusion and at least one reason offered in support. The first move in critical thinking is simply to separate them, because a great deal of persuasive writing hides its conclusion inside a description or buries it in a final clause. Ask: what is this author asking me to accept, and what have they given me for it?
The second move is to look for what has been left unstated. Arguments rely on assumptions that connect a reason to a conclusion — an unspoken belief that this evidence is relevant, that these two groups are comparable, or that what happened once will happen again. Assumptions are not automatically faults; every argument has them. But an argument stands or falls on whether they hold, and naming them is where most original critique comes from.
It also helps to distinguish two separate questions. Is the reasoning sound — does the conclusion actually follow if the reasons are true? And are the reasons true? Generative AI tools produce fluent text, and fluency is a poor proxy for accuracy. They can invent references that look entirely plausible — real-sounding authors, real journals, page ranges that do not exist — and they can state contested claims with unearned confidence. Anything a chatbot tells you should be treated as a hypothesis to check, not a source to cite.
Checking is straightforward if you do it. Look the reference up in your library catalogue or a database; confirm that the authors, title, journal and year match; and read enough of the source to be sure it says what the summary claimed. If a reference cannot be found, do not cite it, and do not cite the tool as though it were the original source.

First, take one reading from your module and write four sentences on it: the conclusion, the main reason, one assumption, and your judgement. Four sentences is small enough to actually do and produces material you can reuse in an essay.
Second, find one source that disagrees with the first and note precisely where the disagreement lies — is it about facts, method, interpretation or values?
