How to Choose a Business and Management Dissertation Topic in the UK (2026)

Short answer: “I will interview managers at my employer” is the most common business dissertation plan and the most common failure. It fails for four predictable reasons, and all four are visible at proposal stage. The alternative is not weaker: UK business research has unusually good free secondary data, and a well-executed quantitative study on Companies House or ONS data will normally outscore six rushed interviews obtained in month five.

Why organisational access collapses

  1. Nobody identified who can actually grant permission. A line manager is not the data controller. Consent to research inside an organisation usually has to come from someone with authority over its data and reputation, and that person is several levels away from the student.
  2. The NDA conflicts with the university. Firms routinely require a confidentiality agreement. Universities require that a dissertation can be examined, deposited and, in some cases, made available. Ethics committees cannot approve an agreement that prevents examination, and negotiating a variation takes longer than the project has.
  3. Your dual role makes consent non-voluntary. If you research your own workplace, your colleagues’ participation is not freely given in the sense a research ethics committee requires, particularly where you are senior to any of them. This is a refusal, not a formality.
  4. Permission arrives too late. Even where everything else works, corporate sign-off routinely lands in month five of a six-month project.

If you do want organisational access, secure written permission from the right person before you submit the proposal, and have a fully specified secondary-data fallback written into it. Supervisors will thank you.

The free data most students never touch

SourceWhat it gives youAccess
Companies House public data APIFilings, officers, PSCs, incorporations and dissolutions, for every UK companyFree, registration and an API key
ONSProductivity, labour market, trade, business demographyFree and open
ONS Business Insights and Conditions SurveyFortnightly firm-level conditions, including AI adoptionFree
data.gov.ukPublic sector open data under the Open Government LicenceFree
FAME (Orbis for the UK)Company financials with screening and peer analysisInstitutional subscription, on campus or via VPN
Bloomberg or LSEG Refinitiv terminalsMarket and financial dataPhysical terminal, limited seats, often booking-only and export-capped
StatistaAggregated statisticsInstitutional; always cite the underlying source, not Statista

Two warnings worth having early. Terminal access is scarcer than it looks: book your slots in advance and check the export limits before you design anything that needs bulk extraction. And the British Library Business & IP Centre, long a standard recommendation, is still recovering from the October 2023 cyber attack, with electronic resources unavailable and no reading room PCs, so plans built on BIPC market reports do not currently work.

Live territory for 2026-27

  • Employment Rights Act 2025. Royal Assent 18 December 2025, with measures phased from 1 and 6 April 2026, electronic and workplace balloting for statutory trade union ballots from 25 August 2026, and further tranches in October 2026 and 2027. Employer response, compliance cost and HR practice change are all live, recent, and supported by real published material.
  • AI adoption in UK firms. ONS published Artificial intelligence in UK businesses: 2023 to 2026 on 20 July 2026. Adoption among businesses with ten or more employees rose from around 12% in September 2023 to around 35% in June 2026, but the mean number of AI technologies per adopting firm moved only from 1.4 to 1.6. Sector spread is wide: 58% in information and communication against 13% in construction. That gap between breadth of adoption and depth of use is a dissertation in itself, and the tables are free.
  • Labour Force Survey transformation. The LFS has acknowledged representativeness problems, with transition to the Transformed LFS scheduled for November 2026. Any dissertation using LFS-based employment series must caveat this, and the transformation is itself a legitimate research object.
  • Corporate transparency. Identity verification for directors and PSCs became mandatory on 18 November 2025. The effect on incorporations and dissolutions is directly measurable through the free Companies House API.

Making a secondary-data topic feel like research

The objection students raise is that secondary analysis feels less like “real” research than interviews. Examiners do not agree, and three moves close the gap.

  • Ask a question the data was not collected to answer. Combining Companies House filings with ONS regional data to test something neither publisher had in mind is original work.
  • Build a conceptual framework in the literature review and map your variables onto it, so the analysis tests a theory rather than describing a spreadsheet.
  • Be specific about limitations. Coverage, definitional changes over time, survey response bias. An honest account of what your data cannot show reads as competence.
