Harvard referencing is the most widely used referencing style in UK universities. This guide explains in-text citations in Harvard format.

Basic In-Text Citation Format

Harvard in-text citations include the author’s surname and year of publication: (Smith, 2023).

Multiple Authors

For two authors use both surnames (Smith and Jones, 2023). For three or more authors use et al. (Smith et al., 2023).

Direct Quotes

When quoting directly, include the page number: (Smith, 2023, p. 45).
